For current MSEN students
All Ph.D. MSEN candidates will be required to take a qualifying examination. If a candidate’s primary department requires a qualifying exam, the student’s advisor, MSEN advisor, and the department’s graduate advisor will determine if the student will take the departmental exam or the MSEN exam. If the candidate’s primary department does not require a qualifying examination, the candidate is required to take the MSEN examination.
- The MSEN qualifying exam consists of a literature review, the writing of a paper about 12 double-spaced pages in length, including references, a minidefense of that paper before the qualifying exam committee.
- The MSEN qualifying examination committee will consist of the candidate’s academic advisor and three MSEN faculty members not on the candidate’s advisory committee. The Examination Committee will be selected by the candidate and the candidate’s advisor. The MSEN Qualifying Examination Committee will create and administer the examination.
- Results of the Qualifying Examination will be forwarded to the MSEN Program Coordinator immediately following the examination. The Program Coordinator will forward the results to the appropriate personnel.
- All qualifying examinations are to be completed within the student’s first 12 months of course work. If the MSEN Qualifying Examination is not successfully passed by the candidate the first attempt, the student will be given one opportunity to pass the examination by the end of the next semester.
